TSUNAMI SURPLUS
TURNING WASTAGE INTO A RESOURCE
PROGRESS SO FAR

School bags being made from surplus cloth

WORK IN PROGRESS AT CHENNAI

Sanitary Napkins being prepared from soft cotton materials

After rigorous sorting of over 10 lakh units, we have been able to get over 6.00 lakh units of useful clothing. Rest of the un-wearable clothes are being converted into various products.

This project of turning Disaster wastage into a major resource is establishing new precedents in dealing with disasters.
Rural women trained on the job are working in a fully equipped unit of 18 sewing machines, developing a range of products.
Over 3200 school bags, 20,000 napkins, thousands of meters of string & a number of other products have already been made by this unit.
Huge quantities of clothes have reached across India as a part of GOONJ’s VASTRADAAN and RAHAT initiatives. The material has also reached the Tsunami affected areas in Tamil Nadu through the state government.

A large quantity of woollens and other clothes reached earthquake-affected areas of Pakistan (through its High Commission) and Kashmir with the help of the Indian Army & the Airforce.

The project is generating employment for about 40 ladies from the nearby villages (Chennai).

The Tamil Nadu government has approached us to train their master trainers in all the state districts to replicate our work on a very large scale. Once unskilled labourers, now our trained lady workers will be the trainers for the govt. officials.
