Tsunami relief work by CEAD
Supported by GOONJ
|
(A
report by CEAD, Andhra Pradesh)
|
| CEAD
has deployed staff and resources in rapid response to the Indian
Ocean Tsunami, a horrific disaster that many say will require
the largest relief effort ever mobilized. Throughout the devastated
region, the organization's distribution of relief materials
aid is reaching more than 4865 people including children. |
| GOONJ..
New Delhi has arranged 3750 kilos of weight consisting of rice,
pulses, biscuits, baby foods, stationery items, clothes (used
and new), blankets, utensils, edible oil, atta, sugar, tea powder
and several other dry food items.
The relief materials have arrived in two consignments.
The first lorry has arrived from New Delhi on 8th January and
we commenced distribution of the above mentioned relief materials
from 9th January. The first consignment 1650 kilos of gross
weight in 56 gunny and carton boxes have distributed to 7 villages
with a total population of 2628 including school going and non-school
going children. The second consignment with 2100 kilos gross
weight in 40 gunny and cartoon boxes have arrived on 20th January
and the same have been distributed from 21st onwards till 23rd
evening.
In the second distribution we are expected to cover 2237 people
including children. The tsunami affected families are very kind
to receive these materials when CEAD shared the information
about GOONJ, Delhi who has taken all the pains to mobilize the
materials and sent all the way from Delhi to Tuni by bearing
transport costs which is also very high.
They thanked GOONJ to come into rescue them by providing enough
relief materials and to ensure critical aid and assistance to
children and families.
|
| CEAD
efforts are currently centered on 14 villages, which are badly
affected by tsunami mainly the livelihood opportunities, and
heavy damages to craft, gear, boats and nets. The current tragedy
has taken an unimaginable loss to fisherfolk families and communities
throughout these villages.
We are yet to distribute some more materials in 3 more villages,
these villages are very critical to reach as they are situated
more or less on islands and it requires a ferryboat. The only
one ferryboat, which was available until the tsunami struck,
is now no more in condition and was badly damaged by tidal waves.
CEAD is trying to hire a dingy to take the materials to other
side and to distribute among those affected.
The medicines received from GOONJ, the general medicines are
distributed and some of the medicines are put to use by the
taskforce teams which are established by CEAD in 5 fishermen
villages under the CBDP-community based disaster preparedness
activity.
