Not just a drop in the ocean…
(A report by Anshu K. Gupta on GOONJ’s campaign ‘RAHAT- TSUNAMI’)

How can you volunteer for GOONJ...

In the cities..

· By helping us in keeping up the same pace for inflow of relief material.
· By helping us in organising collection drives for specific need based items.
· By motivating more people to become a part of this campaign.
· By helping us in sorting the material
· By informing the people about the activities we have done so far and we plan to do in future as a part of our campaign RAHAT- TSUNAMI.

In the affected areas..
· By visiting these places and meeting and talking to the people directly. We’ll guide you about the local conditions. Do meet the local groups, understand their problems, understand their short term and long term needs and inform us. You can really help us a lot in finding the gaps mentioned earlier in this report. It’s only when people who are not directly connected with relief and rehab operations visit these areas and bring back reports and pictures, others like you will be more aware and convinced about the ground realities.

We still need
•Volunteers who can stay on for a longer period of time – and are staggered in time – spread out over a year. A minimum commitment of 10 to 15 days is required. More important is to understand the fact that we will not be able to provide much financial support to the volunteers, so only committed and dedicated people are welcomed as long term involvement needs long term commitments. There are many activities so get in touch, this is critical at this stage as the rush for emotionally charged volunteerism is over with time.

•Funds that are raised to be spent slowly over a year or even two years. Even people who have collected funds to buy and give things must conserve their resources to buy and give things more slowly over a year. We need funds for logistics, buying essential items. You can also take care of expenses for volunteers in which case we’ll be able to cover at least the travel, minimum boarding & lodging expenses by the volunteers.

•Material Support – Different kinds of materials are needed and we have been getting/ need more support from a large group of people for this.

DO NOT STOP collecting/donating

•materiel like- Dry ration- Rice, pulses, spices, cooking oil, sugar, tea, biscuits etc.
•Vessels- especially for cooking, buckets etc.
•Clothes- only sarees, bed sheets & NEW undergarments.
•School items- Toys, stationery, notebooks, school bags etc.
•Other important items like- Medicines, crèches, sanitary napkins, stoves, slippers, mats, mosquito coils/mats

Also please refer the reports from our partner groups to get more info on the implementation of RAHAT- TSUNAMI

It’s certainly gives us immense pleasure that so many individuals & organisations trusted us, supported us and are committed to work with us in future.
